I have updated the Similar Posts plugin for WordPress to Version 1.02. There is no extra functionality but users should upgrade for stability reasons. Version 1,02 protects against a vulnerability where stray characters in the matching terms could cause database errors. This update also fixes a potential naming conflict between the internal names of its options and those of other plugins.

Readings: Job 38:1, 12-21, 40:3-5; Luke 10:13-16
We get a rare glimpse of a family likeness today: Father and Son both letting off steam, both sounding provoked beyond endurance, both ticked off. And both complaining that we continue to be wilfully blind to the plain and glorious truth under our noses.
I love Job, the man, the book. He won’t let up his demand for explanation. And it won’t give up any answer to Job’s predicament. What we do get—which finally silences Job—is this tirade from the tempest’s heart. Who are you? Can you not see? Do you not know? Will you not wonder?

I have updated the Similar Posts plugin for WordPress to Version 1.01. It restores the capacity to use keywords in addition to the default matching terms and it lets users of Related Posts import any keywords they have already assigned.

I came across something to start my day with a laugh (or at least a wry smile) as I browsed the various feeds I’m subscribed to. Unfortunately I can’t give credit to the referrer since I’ve forgotten who it was. (I know … only an hour or two ago but that’s a problem of ME/CFS).
So what amused me? A list of how various philosophical terms are understood inside and outside the profession. I really do need to get a life!

Similar Posts Version 2.0.0 beta is now available. Largely rewritten, it includes better handling of extended character sets, some new options, and many more possible styles of display. Version 2 now has its own page where future developments will be documented.
Comments are now closed for this post but can be added to the new page.

I’ve just installed the Scripturizer plugin by Dean Peters et al. I’ve long wanted to include links to the scripture texts that give the liturgical context for my homilies but been daunted by all the fiddling involved. Scripturizer lets me just insert the scripture references and takes care of the linkage. I’ve tried it out on the last few homiles already posted and it seem to work fine.
There are two slight hitches though. My ideal plugin would be able to go one (big) step further and guess from the post title (and a detailed knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical calendars!) what the scripture of the day might be. Unfortunately that’s a step too far so I’ll not be editing all my past homilies to include scripture references. I still have the vestiges of a life!

For ages now I’ve had a section in the sidebar of single-post pages that lists some other (possibly) related posts. The problem is with the ‘possibly’ — the suggestions just haven’t been very good.
I’ve been using Related Posts (2.02) by Alexander Malov & Mike Lu. It takes the words from the title of the current post and matches them against the text and title of all your other posts. If I were better at naming my posts it could work much convincingly … but I’m not and never will be.

In my recent move I transferred the contents of this blog by using the WordPress XML Import/Export plugin developed by Aaron Brazell (from code by Matt Mullenweg that is being developed for WP 2.1). It basically did the trick as you can see from this working blog however there is a snag. Although it produces a working site it does not preserve all of the post slugs as it imports them. You get working posts but not necessarily with the same permalinks!
I noticed this because all requests to my old blog are being redirected to the new one and some of them are now appear to be missing. They are not but their ‘perma’-links have changed. It has been a problem for maybe 18 posts out of 440.

If you ever have cause to move a WordPress blog from one domain to another you will want visitors to any pages on the old site to be silently redirected to the corresponding page on the new site. This goes particularly for Googlebot and other search engine spiders: you want them to be able to find your new site and update their databases so you don’t lose your ranking.
Moving Your Blog is a simple WordPress plugin that redirects all your posts and pages (status 301, permanently moved). The Admin pages are exempt so you can still administer the old blog. (more…)
