The article says …
In the end he (the MC in “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”) dies quietly, blissfully, a good death for him and his family.
… my mom didn’t die “a good death” and as I write this, I’m caring for my two cats, both in end-state renal failure - not good deaths for them either. It’s been a few years since my mom died and my cats, I know, are just cats, but it all hurts and I have to wonder at the sentiment that rates a loved one’s death.

Well, my cat Spot died yesterday, on my lap, “put to sleep” … there’s a euphemism for you … I guess I’m incapable of grasping the concept of the “good death”
